Originally developed at Toyota, the approach to manufacturing known as Kanban has helped revolutionise how corporations and suppliers achieve maximum efficiency in getting products to and from the assembly line. The method can also be just as effectively employed in other sectors and organisations to both goods and services. When implemented properly, the Kanban technique minimises waste, avoids overproduction, reduces lead-time, and ensures quick response to changes and problems. Kanban maintains an orderly and efficient flow of work throughout the entire operational system reducing work in progress and inventory significantly, increases output and reduces total costs. Everything is focused on the next stage of operations and what is needed there (customer order driven). In a pull system the ideal of producing at the same rate that customers are using the products is being realised. This programme looks at the range of issues involved, and how an organisation might set about improving them, and achieving continuous improvement.
