DFO / DFM is a means of addressing operational issues early in the design cycle, and integrating operating concerns and considerations into a design to obtain a more producible product or service. Costs related to purchasing, stocking, and general infrastructure will go down as the number of components is reduced. Where applicable, inventory levels are reduced with fewer components. As the product structure and required operations are simplified, fewer operational steps are required, process and lead-times are reduced. Design for ease of ‘assembly’ or bringing together into its finished form a product or service is an extension of the DFO / DFM process, or as a standalone issue. The programme looks at how to select processes compatible with the design intent, output volumes and selecting inputs compatible with operational processes and that minimise processing time while meeting functional requirements.
