Writing effectively is important, but so to is the ability to come to, and communicate, higher-level insights so that they may be understood. This course is designed to equip you with the necessary knowledge and skills to improve your ability to come to, and communicate, higher-level insights resulting in clear and effective written business communications.

Course Outcomes/Benefits of Attending:

In this course we will build knowledge of best practice, develop essential skills, and practice and refine our skills as a business communicator. Reference will be made, as required to the theoretical basis of the concepts explored in this course. By the end of this course you will be able to:

Maximise your performance to come to, and communicate, higher-level insights

Apply your knowledge and understanding of the concepts associated with 'Top Down Thinking', and be able to carryout the key activities, both task and process associated with each core concept

Clarify the message of any document

Identify the information that is essential to the message

Structure the document to support the message that is:
- Ensure that the reader is starting at the right place before
being given the argument
- Set up an implied question and answer dialogue with the
reader such that there are no unanswered questions left
with the reader at the end
- Provide only the relevant information and provide it at the
right time

Employ a language for discussing your insights

Plan, carry out and review the effectiveness of your sales/selling interventions.

The Learning Experience:

A highly participative course, by design, which allows participants to put into immediate use their understanding of the approach to Top Down Thinking outlined. Practice sessions enable participants to gauge their levels of understanding (through interactive feedback from the Course Manager and their peer group), and to identify areas for improvement.

The course also involves participants in discussion, practical exercises, small group work and some pre-course work. There is an emphasis on participative exploration.

The Top Down Thinking concepts are introduced through tutor led discussion and learning through observation and feedback. A handbook of best practice guidelines supplements this course and is also provided.

Programme Outline:

The structure of the programme can vary to meet the particular needs of the group. The most effective structure is a modular one based on the principles of action learning. In outline the course programme consists:

Your Role in Communicating Complex Concepts

Why Structured Thinking?

Bottom Up: Grouping Ideas and Formulating Conclusions

Top Down: Structuring the Argument (deductively, inductively, abductively)

Creating the Introductory Flow

Putting it into Practice

Action Planning the application of the programme learning

Establishing follow-up learning needs.
