Why a Course on Public Speaking?
Speaking in public or ‘giving a presentation’ can be a daunting prospect. But with a few simple tips and tricks, a little practice and some preparation, giving a confident and effective presentation is an achievable goal. This workshop will build your skills and confidence as we look at how to plan and structure a presentation, engage with your audience, and create and use visual aids that add interest and impact.

Course Contents
The course contents will include:
- Knowing what works (and doing more of it)
- Speaking with purpose and clarity
- Creating beginnings, middles and endings
- Engaging with your audience
- Getting beyond bullet points
- Making memorable moments
- Practising verbal and non-verbal skills
- Recognising and controlling nerves.

Course Outcomes
By the end of the workshop, you will be able to:
- Plan and structure a presentation so that it achieves its purpose
- Demonstrate how to capture the audience’s attention in the first few minutes
- Create visual aids that add interest, impact and reinforce key messages
- Handle questions and challenges from members of the audience
- Build on your existing skills and incorporate new techniques
- Channel nerves and energy towards delivering confident presentations.

Who Will Be There
The course is open to all and the day will be facilitated by Stephen Blakemore, a skilled trainer and NCVO approved consultant with over 20 years' experience working with voluntary organisations in the UK and overseas. Steve will be assisted by Jacinta Sweeney, who has a background in teaching and training with organisations including Voluntary Service Overseas and Advantage Africa.

Booking Your Place
The cost, which includes a participant’s pack, sandwich lunch and refreshments, is £40 per person if booked by 30th April and £50 thereafter. Proceeds will support the work of Advantage Africa among people affected by poverty, disability and AIDS.
