Verner Wheelock Associates Introduces New Nutrition Tutors

We are pleased to announce that we have two new tutors for our nutrition courses: Dr Lisa Gatenby and Gill Hooper. Both are experienced lecturers at Leeds Trinity University College.

Verner met Lisa a few years ago when he was working on his Healthy Eating in Schools project and book as she was working on her PhD.  Lisa and Gill will be sharing the teaching of the RSPH Diploma and the Certificate course (now called Level 3 Award in Nutrition for Healthier Food and Special Diets) and will be available for in-house training.

Dr Lisa Gatenby

Lisa completed her PhD looking at packed lunches and school dinners, their nutritional content and putting this into context with food consumed throughout a full day. Prior to this Lisa completed a Masters of Medical Science in Human Nutrition at the University of Sheffield, having previously graduated with honours from Leeds Metropolitan University with a degree in Food Systems and Quality Management.

Lisa has a practical background gained working within the hospitality industry as a chef and in food development with the food industry. She is a qualified and Registered Nutritionist and worked on the Free Healthy School Meal Evaluation Programme as a Researcher assessing the quality and nutritional content of food in schools.  Following this Lisa developed a pilot programme called Cooking Communities at Leeds Trinity University College where she co-ordinated and evaluated the effectiveness of intergenerational and cross cultural after school cooking clubs in secondary schools. 

Lisa now works as a nutrition Lecturer at Leeds Metropolitan University and Leeds Trinity University College.  Lisa also runs Healthwise a nutritional consultancy company.

 Gill Hooper

Gill is a Lecturer and Home Economist and has experience of working in schools and colleges teaching Nutrition and Food and practical cooking skills.  She graduated with an honours degree in Home Economics from Leeds Polytechnic and has been teaching in further and higher education for 17 years.

Gills main academic interests involve increasing childrens, young people and families knowledge of food, nutrition and health.  She has worked with Lisa on the Cooking Communities project at Leeds Trinity University College evaluating the effectiveness of intergenerational after school cooking clubs in secondary schools. 

Currently a lecturer at Leeds Trinity University College, Gill is Programme Manager and Nutrition Lead on MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do it!), a childhood obesity programme helping families become fitter, healthier and happier.

We will be launching an online Level 2 Nutrition course in the near future which will appeal to those working in healthcare or catering (especially schools, nurseries and care homes), sports coaching or weight management. Look out for more information in the coming months.
